
Friends and family have always envied my sleep. I have had an uncanny ability to lay my head on a pillow and within minutes be in la-la land. Unfortunately, not recently. Perhaps it is hidden caffeine in summer drinks, or my mind that won’t stop agonizing over to-do’s not completed and tomorrow’s long list that won’t all get done. Maybe it’s my age. Or the season. Whatever the reason, I have adopted a habit rarely practiced in the past – an afternoon nap. But what better way to pass time during the hottest part of a summer day than in a cool, shaded environment, comfortably snoozing? I am not complaining, simply wondering if this habit will be long-term or temporary.

I’ve also gotten into the occasional napping habit. There’s nothing more delicious than feeling my eyelids getting heavy while reading in late afternoon and giving into that wonderful surrender. Even a few minutes can make a difference.
In addition to too much caffeine late in the day, too much sugar in the evening keeps me awake at night or wakes me up and I can’t get back to sleep. A remedy is to get up and eat some protein, then my blood sugar goes down.
